£50 Note Campaign Gathers Pace

The campaign for an ethnic minority to appear on the new £50 note is receiving further attention, with further encouragement given for Mary Seacole to be chosen for this honour.

Our Chair, Trevor Sterling was interviewed by ITV news last week following Helen Grant, the Conservative Member for Maidstone and The Weald, urging MPs to pass the bill amid fears a disproportionate number of “historic white men” appearing on previous banknotes.

She added that choosing who to portray on a new £50 note is a “wonderful opportunity” to send a message about modern Britain.

Mrs Grant said the UK’s diverse communities had made a “seismic contribution” to the country, citing Mary Seacole, a British-Jamaican nurse who tended soldiers during the Crimean War alongside Florence Nightingale, as an example.
