As the Mary Seacole Trust hosts its first International Nurses Day webinar, the Trust resonates powerfully with the 2026 theme: “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies.”

Mary Seacole embodied this principle over 150 years ago. She wasn’t just treating wounds on the Crimean frontline, she was building systems of care where none existed, financing her own work, and supporting nurses and patients alike through dignity, resilience, and practical skill. Her legacy shows that when nurses are empowered with agency, respect, and resources, they don’t just save lives. They strengthen entire communities and economies.
